Computing

At Yatton Schools, we aim to develop successful life-long learners, responsible citizens, confident individuals and effective contributors through a rich and engaging Computing curriculum.

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. The core of our curriculum is computer science, where children learn the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to apply this knowledge through programming.

Building on this, pupils use information technology to create content, systems and programs, while developing as digitally literate learners who can express themselves and participate safely in an ever-evolving digital world.

Our curriculum reflects our Yatton Learner behaviours, encouraging curiosity, collaboration, confidence and resilience, alongside key computing mindsets such as exploration, questioning, critical thinking and creativity.

Implementation

Our Computing curriculum is taught through a clear and progressive programme, based on the National Curriculum and supported by the Teach Computing Curriculum. This provides a carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills, ensuring learning is built on year by year and revisited over time.

To ensure a broad and balanced curriculum, learning is organised into four key areas:

  • Computer systems and networks
  • Programming (computer science)
  • Data and information
  • Creating media

These areas are revisited through a spiral curriculum, enabling children to build on prior learning and deepen their understanding.

Lessons are practical, engaging and inclusive, allowing children to:

  • design and create digital content
  • develop programming skills
  • solve problems and think logically
  • reason, explain and evaluate their work

We provide opportunities for pupils to present, publish and celebrate their learning, building confidence and pride in their work, while encouraging collaboration and creativity.

Online safety is taught regularly and embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring children understand how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.

Impact

By the time children leave Yatton Schools, they are confident and competent users of technology. They can think computationally, solve problems, and apply their knowledge to a range of contexts.

They leave as digitally literate learners who can create, communicate and participate safely in the modern world, equipped with the skills and mindset needed for future learning and employment.
