Design & Technology

Our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to provide children with creative opportunities to design, make, and evaluate products using a wide range of materials, including textiles, woodwork, and electrical circuits. Skills acquired in Design and Technology lessons draw upon learning from other areas of the curriculum—such as mathematics and science—allowing children to build on previous knowledge and deepen understanding.

In addition, children develop valuable life skills through food technology by learning where food comes from, how ingredients differ, and how to bake and cook using safe techniques. Our aim is to nurture confident, capable learners who can apply practical skills with creativity and purpose.

Artistic Mindset

Children are encouraged to approach their work with curiosity and critical thinking, through:

  • Exploration
  • Experimentation
  • Comparison
  • Evaluation

Artistic Proficiency

Pupils develop technical and creative competence as they:

  • Choose tools and media deliberately for effect
  • Use techniques with increasing accuracy
  • Explore and analyse their own and others’ work
  • Refine and improve designs

Design & Technology Skills

Children learn and apply a full design process, including:

  • Researching
  • Evaluating
  • Planning and designing
  • Making prototypes
  • Refining
  • Selecting materials
  • Cutting and joining
  • Testing finished products

Systems and Implementation

The effective delivery of Design and Technology is supported by:

  • Medium‑term planning
  • Clear roles for Teaching Assistants
  • Support and challenge for all learners
  • Retrieval of prior learning
  • Ongoing assessment and tracking
