Key Stage 1 - Years 1&2

At the start of Year 1,  your child will begin the National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Key Stage 1.

Compulsory national curriculum subjects at Key Stage 1 are:

  • English
  • maths
  • science
  • design and technology
  • history
  • geography
  • art and design
  • music
  • physical education (PE)
  • computing

Schools must provide Religious Education (RE) but parents can ask for their children to be taken out of the whole lesson or part of it.

We also teach PSHE (personal, social and health education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education. Health Education and Relationships Education (primary) becomes compulsory in all primary schools from September 2020.

See Year Group pages for more specific information on what the children will be learning term by term and Subject Pages for more information on the different curriculum areas.

Assessment

We believe that effective assessment can drive improvements in learning for all learners. In the school we use a mixture of both summative and formative assessment to help us to support and challenge learners.

Our assessments:

  • Give reliable information to parents about how their child, and their child’s school, is performing
  • Help drive improvement for pupils and teachers
  • Make sure the school is keeping up with external best practice and innovation

The most important assessment of learning for our learners is in the feedback we give day-to-day in a variety of ways.

Yatton Infant School engages with other schools within the Lighthouse Schools Partnership in moderation sessions on assessment from the EYFS up to Year 2, working with colleagues  to ensure consistency and sound judgements. In house writing moderation also happens regularly.

National Tests and assessments

Year 1 phonics screening check

The Year 1 phonics check will take place in June when your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If your child does not do well enough in the check they’ll have to do it again in Year 2.

Key stage 1

Key stage 1 tests cover:

  • English reading
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • maths

Your child will take the tests in May when they are in Year 2. You can ask the school for the test results.

You’ll be sent the results of your child’s teacher assessments automatically.
